Grey skies open, rain drums on the roof, and the world smells fresher. Many people assume the shower scrubbed the atmosphere clean. So does rain actually clean the air? Often yes — but not always, and not equally for every pollutant.

Short storms in dry regions can slap the ground hard enough to lift dust. AQI may spike during or immediately after the storm, then improve once heavier rain settles the dust. Wildfire smoke high in the atmosphere may also pass above rain clouds, leaving surface-level PM2.5 barely changed.
Acid rain chemistry is less about your daily AQI number and more about long-term environmental effects — but sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in the air can dissolve into rainwater. That helps remove those gases from the air you breathe even as it acidifies the rain itself.

Clean air after rain is often temporary. Traffic resumes, evaporation lifts road dust and fuel residues, and heating systems switch back on. Morning rush hour after an overnight storm can rebuild PM2.5 surprisingly fast in dense cities.
Humidity left behind can also affect how pollution feels — heavy, muggy air with moderate PM2.5 may feel worse than dry air at the same AQI. Watch the hourly trend rather than assuming one shower bought you a full day outdoors.
