A blocked nose at 6 a.m. is not always a cold or allergy attack. Overnight, the air in your bedroom changes: CO₂ builds up, humidity drops, and pollutants from cooking, traffic, or heating accumulate if windows stay shut.
Indoor air overnight
PM2.5 from outdoor traffic can seep inside. Gas heaters and stoves release nitrogen dioxide. Dust mites and mould thrive in humid, poorly ventilated rooms. Together they inflame nasal passages while you sleep.
Simple improvements
- Ventilate for 10–15 minutes when outdoor AQI is good, then close before rush hour.
- Use a bedroom humidifier if air is very dry — aim for comfortable, not damp.
- Vacuum with a HEPA filter and wash bedding regularly.
- Check outdoor AQI before leaving windows open all night in winter.
