Babies breathe more air per body weight than adults. When outdoor AQI is elevated, a quiet HEPA purifier in the nursery can reduce exposure — especially during wildfire smoke or winter inversion season.
Avoid ozone-generating “air cleaners.” Stick to mechanical HEPA filtration under 40 dB on sleep mode for overnight use.
Cable management matters as much as filtration in a nursery — choose a unit with a short, sturdy cord or a wall-tucked placement, and avoid models with exposed intake grilles a curious toddler could reach once mobile.
Place the unit a meter or more from the crib so airflow reaches the room generally rather than blowing directly and continuously on the baby. Oversizing slightly for the room and running on a lower, quieter setting continuously is usually better for sleep than running a smaller unit on high.
During confirmed high-AQI days (check the live reading for your city on Aether), keep the nursery door closed while the purifier runs to maintain a cleaner-air room the child can be moved into.
