Apartments with limited space often need a single console unit for the main living area. When outdoor AQI is poor, seal gaps and filter — don’t rely on leaky window fans to “bring in fresh air.”
When outdoor AQI is green, open windows. When it is orange or worse, close up and run HEPA filtration sized for the room you occupy most.
In shared walls or small apartments, a unit's sleep-mode decibel rating matters as much as its CADR — an otherwise great purifier that's too loud to run overnight will simply get switched off when you need it most. Look for published dB ratings at the lowest fan speed, not just the maximum.
Renters should avoid purifiers that require permanent window modifications; freestanding console units with a washable pre-filter and swappable HEPA cartridge are easier to bring along at lease-end and don't risk deposit deductions for altered fittings.
